Lest We Forget – Remembrance Activities
Gainford CE Primary School & Pre-School have been remembering the fallen, creating displays for St.Mary’s Church and placing decorated stones on the memorial.
Fallen Tommie’s – a visit from our Local Historian
We were delighted to welcome Mr Pullen the local Historian into Class Tees to talk to the children about the fallen soldiers who served their country during the first and second world and sadly died as a result of the conflicts. The children where given the opportunity to hold items from that era and the children also saw the Men from Gainford who are remembered for their contribution during the wars. A collection of medals was also on show and the children asked lots of questions and were remind the importance of Remembrance Sunday, a time for reflection and for those who fought for our freedom.
Careers Day – Visit by Local Artist Jo Pickering
Local artist Jo Pickering came in to talk to the children about a career as an artist. She demonstrated various mediums that she uses to create her fabulous artwork and talked them though the process of how she creates her pictures. The children were inspired by the artwork she brought in to show them and we know that we have very creative in school already, who exhibited at the recent art exhibition.
Fire Brigade Visit Oct 2023
The crew from the local Fire Brigade visited the school to remind children of the dangers of bonfires and sparklers in the run up to Bonfire Night and taught them some life skills in the event of a fire.
Harvest Festival 2023
On Thursday morning we held our Harvest Festival service at St Marys Church, Gainford. Revd. Eileen Harrop welcomed all to church to share in this service of thanksgiving. The staff and pupils had worked very hard preparing their contributions for the service.
Class Swale shared their pictures of autumn and proudly walked down the aisle with their wonderful work on display for all to see. They sang their songs, ‘Picture of Autumn’ and ‘Thank God for Harvest ‘and it was a sheer delight to see our youngest children standing at the front of church and singing so well.
Class Wear had been learning about harvest around the world and shared their work all about about different countries and the food they produce. They didn’t look nervous at all.
Class Tees shared The Story of Ruth with all children reading their individual parts and through their thoughtfully written prayers they reminded us to be thankful for the food and produce that we have in our homes and to remember those less fortunate than themselves. Both of our junior classes delivered two wonderful songs Conkers a firm favourite!) and Harvest Samba which had been quite a tricky one to learn!
Sarah Fells, the Children, Young people and Families Missioner from church, worked with a new Worship Leaders group on a wonderful dramatization of the Parable of the Sower. They all performed so well.
I really must thank all of the adults who have worked with our children to prepare for the service and for all of our friends from church too. A huge thank you to all of our school families for sending in donations. For such a small school the tables in church were so full of your kind donations; these will be shared between Butterwick Hospice and The Well food bank.
Many thanks to Freddie’s granddad, John, for supplying us with an ENORMOUS onion from his allotment too!
Mental Health & Well-being Afternoon
On Tuesday afternoon, in their house teams (Oak, Sycamore & Willow), pupils took part in a wide range of activities to promote mental health and well- being.
Children enjoyed working along-side their older or younger pupils. Our house captains and vice captains were fabulous role models and some helped to lead activities such as making aromatherapy play dough and peg dolls. Other activities included painting, dancing, learning about emotions, mindfulness colouring and making worry monsters. We all enjoyed yoga – and some children said that they felt very calm and relaxed afterwards, others felt invigorated! Everybody agreed that it was a fabulous afternoon.
Gainford Pupils take part in Art Exhibition
Gainford CE Primary and Preschool pupils and staff always throw themselves into supporting community events and projects and they jumped at the chance to show off their artistic skills at Gainford Village Art Exhibition
Every child in school, from the youngest Preschool children to the oldest year 6 pupils worked very hard on different art projects to produce work to exhibit .
Class Tees , Year5 and Year 6, took inspiration from a recent visit to Raby Castle. They sketched towers and the gatehouse in their sketchbooks and then transferred their images to a polystyrene tile for printing. They then experimented with different coloured paints and papers to see which combination they preferred for their final print . the children then followed this up by painting on ceramic tiles with pictures representing all of the things they saw at Raby Castle .
Class Swale had been learning about trains and railways . Pre- school and Reception enjoyed whizzing trains with wheels covered in paint across paper with brilliant effect. Soft pastels were used with a masking tape track which was then peeled back to reveal their track pictures .
As a whole class they were inspired by LS Lowry .They watercolour -washed backgrounds using primary colours ,as Lowry used to do, mixing secondary colours as they needed them . they then used charcoal and poster paints to add railways, bridges, viaducts to the foreground
Class Wear ,Years 3 and 4 represented the sky at different times of the day and night -but they weren’t allowed to use blue! They learnt about colour mixing and used watercolours and also used acrylic paint for their moon images . The children were very proud of their final pieces of art work
Mrs Chris Riley, Headteacher commented,” The resulting art work was very impressive with all children learning new skills and working with new materials. All of the children were very proud of the fact that their art work would be exhibited alongside the work of other, local artists, mainly adults, and that it would be seen by a wider audience. It was good to hear that lots of families had visited the exhibition and had been very impressed by the art work on display. Many thanks must go to the staff who worked on the art work with the children and a huge thank you to Mrs Gallagher who not only shared her artistic skills with the children who also organised our display. Many thanks must also go to the organisers of this exhibition which is a real showcase for local talent.
Open the Book – The Story of Abraham
The Open the Book team is made up of local parishioners, All of the pupils at Gainford CE Primary and Preschool had a real treat this term . The Open the Book team delivered a fabulous story for all to enjoy. The aim of Open the Book is to equip people to share Bible stories with children in an accessible and enjoyable way for those of all faiths and none and to enable children to engage imaginatively with the text?including friends from church and some of our school governors, who help to bring Bible stories alive through drama and singing. Sarah Fells, the new Children and Families Missioner for church and school has also been drafted in to be part of this hard-working team.
The team retold the story of Abraham in an exciting way so that all of the pupils from preschool to Year 6 could enjoy it. There were lots of acting and audience participation with several pupils taking the parts of goats, sheep and camels; animal sound effects were marvellous! All pupils joined in with actions and words and they all sang ‘Who put the Colours in the Rainbow’.
Mrs Riley Headteacher said,” The Open the Book Team share the stories in an exciting, engaging and memorable way making learning fun for our pupils. I really do think that the Open the Book team and the pupils involved deserve Oscars for their performances! They really add another dimension to our morning worship sessions. This is also something that all pupils can share, enjoy and learn from, from our youngest children in Pre- School to our oldest in Year 6.”
Here are some of the children’s comments:
“I liked listening to the story and seeing people in costumes,” Jessica.
“It helped me understand the story and the message it was trying to tell,” Ada.
“The actors are very good and I enjoyed joining in with the words and the acting. This helped me remember the story,” Ryan.
Gainford pupils can’t wait for their next visit in December!
